FAQ
Have a question for us? Never hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you have. Here are some common ones we receive.
1. Our organization is already strengths-based for self growth How is this different?
It is wonderful your organization is philosophically aligned with strengths-based practice. SMCM offers the structures, processes, tools, methods, and interventions to bring consistency in approach across a team of helping professionals.
2. Being strengths-based sounds great, but the people we work with experience significant problems, barriers, and challenges.
The Strengths Model does not ignore, minimize, or try to positively reframe the problems, barriers, or challenges people experience. Many people we work with have experienced significant traumas, distressing or debilitating symptoms, addictions, loss and grief, etc. We also recognize that people have hopes, dreams, values, identities, strengths, and capabilities that exist apart from what they experience or have experienced in life. We can validate and help people address problems, barriers, and challenges AND take steps toward things the person values or wants in life.
3. Is the Strengths Model only for case managers?
While SMCM is an evidence-based practice for case or care management services, our trainings have benefited a wide range of staff that include therapists, substance use counselors, peer specialists, supported employment and education specialists, housing advocates, street outreach workers, personal service coordinators, and more. SMCM is most effective when embedded on a multi-disciplinary team and within an organization that shares a common mission, philosophical orientation, values, and integrated practice approaches.
